A Swingin Night

Toes are tapping, skirts are swishing, popcorn is popping and the air is thick with the smell of hairspray. Why, you ask? It’s 50’s night at Alabaster Theatre School!

On Thursday the 23rd of June, Alabaster School had our 50’s and 60’s end of term Showcase. Parents, families and friends were invited to join us in dressing up and stepping back in time.

Our students performed a variety of classics from musicals such as Godspell, Little Shop of Horrors and Hairspray. Day by Day was a sweet little number, with many of the younger girls performing or using a microphone for the very first time. We were so proud of them! A mixture of older students and teachers performed songs from Hairspray and it looked as though they’d stepped back in time to perform for a TV audience in the 60’s! Students from our adult class shared a monologue and performed the song, ‘Somewhere That’s Green’ from Little Shop of Horrors, inviting the audience into a moment in the life of a daydreaming housewife in the 50’s.

Everybody had so much fun snapping, clapping and spinning, we played 50s musical chairs and taught everybody some classic swingin moves. Parents were invited to take some time out and romantically slow dance to the crooning of Elvis Presley. It was so touching to see so many couples seizing that moment.

The final performance of the night was ‘Come So Far’, from the musical ‘Hairspray’. Students from all of Alabaster’s classes took to the stage and it was an absolute blast! We really have come so far and have got so far to go!  We had a fun term digging up music of the 50’s and 60s at Alabaster and even more fun working on the songs and choreography.

Thankyou to everyone who joined us.
